GUTMENSCH

Being a true ‘Gutmensch’ Marjolijn is deeply touched by the refugee crisis. She wants to take action and help out. Full of spirit she takes care of the Afghan Zohre. But gradually it becomes evident that she has to give something else than she has to offer.

In November 2015 Afghan refugee Zohre rings Marjolijn’s doorbell to ask if she can stay for the night. After some hesitation, the door opens and a blanket is placed on the sofa. First there is discomfort and silence and then slowly but surely there is more. From a number of crucial scenes between Zohre and Marjolijn we distil the year that has passed since Zohre first visited Marjolijn and slept on her sofa. A year filled with good intentions, awkward attempts, mutual expectations and suspicion. A year filled with phone calls with reluctant authorities, driving lessons and nocturnal conversations about loneliness and loss. A short film about small lives in the light of big problems.
